About VAPA:

The Virginia Alliance of Paralegal Associations (VAPA) was formed by six associations in 1989 and is now compromised of paralegal associations and individual area liaisons located within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The Roanoke Valley Paralegal Association is a charter member of VAPA which represents RVPA on state issues and is involved in shaping guidelines affecting the regulation and development of the paralegal profession.

RVPA Officers on VAPA’s VARP Committee:

Audrey Gray, VARP: Primary Delegate

Beth Reed Cundiff, VARP: Secondary Delegate & VAPA Secretary

Virginia Registered Paralegal (VARP)

The Alliance has developed Educational Standards & Professional Responsibility Guidelines for Paralegals in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In September 1994, VAPA developed and adopted the Educational Standards and Professional Responsibility Guidelines for Paralegal.  These are recommended by the Virginia State Bar Standing Committee on Unauthorized Practice of Law by Resolution adopted March 8, 1995. These standards serve as the basis for the development of the VARP program.

November 7, 2015 VAPA adopted a Policy on Paralegal Regulation by approving the Virginia Registered Paralegal (VARP) program, a voluntary paralegal credentialing system. In January 2016 the VAPA implemented the Virginia Registered Paralegal (VARP) program.  A paralegal with the VARP designation is required to complete a minimum of twelve hours of CLE credits including two hours of ethics every two years and provide proof of completion of the requisite CLE hours to VAPA to maintain his/her VARP credential.
